One Month Lam Rim Meditation Course at kopan

A Life Changing Event

The one month meditation course at Kopan was established in 1971 by Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche, the founders of Kopan Monastery. Since then the course has been held every year, attended by thousands of people looking for meaning and happiness in their lives. The course follows the Tibetan Gelug Tradition of Buddhism, and is based on Lama Tsong Khapa's Graduated Path to Enlightenment (Lam Rim), one of the most important texts of the Gelug Tradition.

The course will cover many important topics such as, to name just a few, the Three Jewels: Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, the Four Noble Truths, Karma,  The Nature of our Mind, Conventional and Ultimate Truth, Twelve Links of Dependent Origination, Bodhicitta. Additional important topics such as the our buddha nature, will be introduced. There is also a section on thought transformation so as to learn how to deal better with problems in daily life.

The course is based on the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha, which form a complete and gradual spiritual path (Lam Rim), leading to ultimate happiness and enlightenment. Through cultivating an awareness of our present conditions we gain an understanding of the nature of our dissatisfaction and unhappiness, the causes of these states of mind and how we can overcome them. We can then direct our energy to deal more effectively with any situation, be it positive or negative. Many of the ideas presented will be new and sometimes contrary to Western beliefs. We request you to come with an open mind and a willingness to analyze, question and contemplate the teachings as well as your own beliefs. To help you decide if this course is right for you, please read the extensive information below before booking for this course.  More  extensive information on this course will be available in May.

The topics that are presented during the course, such as karma, rebirth, mind and its functions etc. will be examined from various perspectives, analyzing their profound meaning as well as explaining their day-to-day applications in a normal Western life. It is an excellent introduction to the theory and practice of Tibetan Buddhism as well as an opportunity to touch base with the root teachings, and deepen one's understanding.

But most of all this is an experiential course. Most people are touched by the teachings at a very deep level. The teachings are challenging long held and treasured beliefs, and at the same time offer a new perspective on a range of issues.

It takes courage to take this course, and patience. Courage because you will see yourself in a new way, listen to teachings that might sound strange and challenging. Patience because it takes time to change old habits. Developing a good heart, learning to be more tolerant and loving takes time.

During this month there is the time to get the process going. Lama Yeshe used to say: "Our wisdom light is light a puny little flame, it needs protection. Take it out of the wind, so it can grow and shine brightly." Take your wisdom mind out of the wind for one month, and experience the difference this makes.

Lama Zopa Rinpoche, the founder and spiritual director of Kopan and the FPMT is expected to teach in the second half of the course. Please check the teachings dates on this website in mid November.
